Genshin Impact Wanderer goal and story arc reveal a compelling journey of self-discovery and forgiveness, promising dramatic future twists.

If you have been attempting to figure out what Wanderer's current intentions are in Genshin Impact, then you are not alone. His story arc is one of the most disarrayed and engaging in the game, especially in light of all events related to Irminsul. In a nutshell, however, it is clear that Wanderer is no longer pursuing god-like status, working for the Fatui or trying to erase himself from existence; he is now focused on something that is much more deeply personal: to live according to his own decisions, to retain the past that he has retrieved and to progress toward a future in which no one else suffers the type of damage that he has.

What is The Goal Of Wanderer Now In Genshin Impact?

The most accurate response to Wanderer's goal now in Genshin Impact is that he is trying to determine his own purpose for living without resorting to using anyone else to define it for him. He has made a verbal commitment to assist the Traveler when necessary, as well as to remain an independent entity moving forward. However, his reasons for doing so are much deeper than they initially appear on the surface.

The theme of his current narrative is forgiveness without self-redemption. In accepting Scaramouche's memories, Wanderer has also accepted the suffering of Tatarasuna, the deaths that are associated with him and the truth behind Dottore's cunning plans. Nevertheless, the act of accepting those memories does not equate to forgiving himself; in fact, one could argue, he feels he is purposely carrying those burdens as he does not feel he deserves to stop shedding the weight.

This theme creates a stark contrast between the arc of Wanderer and the general RPG redemption story. Yes, Scaramouche (Wanderer) has changed but he has not been purely purified through the story's narrative, meaning that there is still no easy way for him to find peace within himself. While he is still moving forward, he does so with a complete constant reminder of the past (i.e., events that cannot be reversed or undone).

In addition, he still holds significant personal animosity towards Dottore. As of 2026, his desire for revenge against Dottore along with other unresolved conflicts will continue to be one of the largest ongoing conflicts in Genshin Impact history. When Scaramouche left the Fatui, he didn't leave on good terms or with closure. He left with the knowledge that Dottore manipulated him during one of the most traumatic moments in his life, which has caused irreparable damage that can't be resolved; that same damage will continue to affect him throughout Genshin's story.

Wanderer's new goal is somewhat quieter than his original goal of proving he was more than just a tool to Dottore. The game alludes to Wanderer no longer wanting to set others up for manipulation and/or cruelty - the kind of manipulation and cruelty that defined him as a character. He may not express this goal in a heroic or soft way; however, that goal exists. He will do whatever he can to stop the cycle from continuing.

Wanderer's Story Arc After Irminsul

The change from Scaramouche to Wanderer is more than just him being given a new name. By erasing himself from Irminsul, he was trying to erase the pain associated with being Scaramouche. What really happened is that the world forgot about him but his suffering did not go away.

This is a very important distinction - the world was not erased and rewritten history in an easy-to-read, safe-to-read way. Tatarasuna occurred regardless. Those he cared for were still lost, but he had been erased from the chain of events so that the world had forgotten his existence. The failure of this outcome is crucial to understanding where he is now as he tried to give up his historical identity and could not find the relief he was looking for; there was no reset, no miracle, no emotional shortcut to the desired result, only absence.

A key role was played by Nahida. She kept Tatarasuna's true history recorded and ensured he could find it someday, which initially pushed him to erase himself. Since then, they settled into a peaceful relationship where Nahida continues watching over him while Wanderer helps the Traveler under loose conditions and has a fair amount of freedom.

The importance of his Anemo Vision as it applies here is that Anemo in Genshin is directly associated with freedom, and Wanderer received this Vision at the moment he chose to take on the burden of Scaramouche's memories rather than leaving them behind. This moment speaks volumes to the fact that he was not forced into this burden; rather, he chose it for himself, which largely sets the course for where he is now.

Motivations of Wanderer in Genshin's Current Lore

Upon closer examination of Wanderer's dialogue, character stories, and event writing, it becomes quite clear there is one pattern that continues to repeat itself: the conflict between freedom and purpose in Wanderer's life. He was created as a prototype vessel for Ei and had no intention of living a life of his own. While the fact that he had developed emotions spared him, it ultimately led to his being lost for centuries without an identity, as well as without any stable sense of self. In order to truly understand his current motives, it is important to break those down into the following categories.

Core Motive Underlying Trauma Current Status
Revenge on Dottore The manipulation of Tatarasuna and the creation of a false story of betrayal Unresolved, still an active antagonistic thread
Defining himself outside of old names Rejected by Ei and exploited by the Fatui Continuing to progress and using his vision to show progress
To protect others from experiencing the same fate The death of Katsuragi and Niwa and the young boy Expressed through assistance to others behind the scenes
To free himself from the purpose assigned to him by others To help create a tool and to be used as a tool by the fatui As a declaration with the anemo vision

The emotional epicenter of all the motives listed above is Tatarasuna. For centuries, he believed Niwa betrayed him, which contributed deeply to who he became. Discovering that the entire story had been created by Dottore did not free him but rather worsened everything because the feelings of resentment he had confined himself to for years had now been induced by someone else as part of a larger scheme.

The wounds that he has tied to Ei run parallel to those issues as well. He perceived the act of being released by her to have been an act of abandonment rather than an act of mercy, and he has repeatedly experienced this pattern of acts being perceived as having occurred in malice rather than in mercy. Due to that, the continuing fallout from that is also evident in his experiences concerning trust, attachment, and vulnerability. Severing ties with the Fatui does not change the fact that the damage he experienced while there has still impacted him. He is not part of the Fatui anymore, but since the injury was so great, there will be no way for him to recover without continued renovation of himself.

Wanderer Relationships

Nahida

Nahida is one of the most important people in Wanderer's current life; however, their relationship is not entirely traditional. There is a level of observer and guide present in her role, as well as a level of restraits on his behavior based on her presence. They benefit from the arrangement because of Wanderer's encyclopedic knowledge regarding the Fatui provides her access to invaluable information; conversely, Wanderer gains protection, direction, and space outside his previous role.

Similarly, their relationship is now representative of something more significant than just a clean transaction. Nahida has basic human compassion for Wanderer by preserving the realities of Tatarasuna and creating the means by which he has been forced to face this truth; moreover, she did not attempt to force him into a new identity after his rebirth, which is very important to someone in Wanderer's condition. Because she did not attempt to impose a new identity on him after death, he now trusts her more than he trusts almost anyone else.

Traveler

Wanderer and Traveler share one of the more unique relationships in the game right now. To refer to each other as "friends", given their extensive history from Inazuma to the Shouki no Kami fight, would not accurately describe their current dynamic.

However, there is an uneasy alliance between them, one built upon their underlying connection through previous truths. The Traveler has a very clear sense of the person he used to be before he met Wanderer and is aware of how he feels about that. However, despite their very different feelings towards one another, there is a strange degree of stability to their relationship resulting from the mutual honesty they have about who they are (and will always be) as people. This fact provides a form of stability to both characters/individuals, as although it is not comfortable, it is at least a real foundation on which they can develop. For Wanderer especially, perhaps ultimately, this may account for the larger strength of their bond.

Dottore

At the core of Wanderer's storyline lies his intense hatred of Dottore; his hatred for Dottore is as simplistic and visceral as they can be, stemming from Dottore's role as orchestrator of some of the most egregiously traumatic times in Wanderer's life, as well as perpetrator of Dottore's own efforts to recruit, study, and exploit Wanderer's abilities and experiences.

The things that Wanderer knows about Dottore—including that he is still one of the most dangerous individuals active within Teyvat today and has tremendous quantities of power and influence—suggest to Wanderer that there are many, many different circumstances under which their conflict is guaranteed to occur sometime in the future. Therefore, it is inevitable that they are destined to have some sort of confrontation at some point over the course of Wanderer's greater post -Irminsul arc.

The Significance of Wanderer's Goal in the Context of Future Genshin Impact

As the Genshin Impact storyline continues to progress toward Snezhnaya, Wanderer's prominence and importance become more significant with each passing chapter. The fact that he has spent over a century working with the Fatui (particularly on numerous Abyss-related missions) and had numerous opportunities to get to know the various Harbingers means that there are virtually no other Travelers' allies able to match his level of inside information regarding the Fatui's operations, motivations, etc.

Thus, he represents an extremely valuable behind-the-scenes asset. Most likely the key here is the idea of 'behind the scenes.' The Wanderer is not treated as a hero up front, nor does he feel like one to the player's perspective. Instead of being an integral part of the major events, it is much more probable that he will be influencing the major events from the edges, stepping into action only when absolutely necessary instead of being at the very forefront of the attention-getting events.

The Dottore storyline provides the greatest potential payoff for this character. Since Il Dottore has created so many different segmented versions of himself through cloning, any eventual conflict between him and the Wanderer would probably be an extremely complicated issue as opposed to the usual one-to-one battle you would expect to see. When the Wanderer goes after Dottore, it will not be to kill just one man in the usual sense. Rather, he will be going after a vast web of connected clones, each with the same intelligence, cruelty, and agenda. Therefore, the conflict is not only larger, but it is also much more intriguing.

There are many indications already starting to appear which support this concept. Events taking place across multiple seasons, lines of voicemails by specific characters from the storyline, and snippets of narrative-style lore that will be released during the 2025-2026 timeframe will continue to present evidence of the Wanderer’s indifference while simultaneously showing evidence of his investment in the eventual outcomes. For example, he will say one thing but do another, which makes up much of the contrast at play with respect to his character.

If you're watching where the story goes from here, the top threads to follow to find out will be:

  • Snezhnaya connections via the Wanderer's Fatui history

  • Dottore payoff as part of this long-standing unresolved conflict in the game

  • Influence in shadow rather than a typical hero in the limelight

  • Lines of voicemails and Lorenzo-like lore continue to show more information that what they derive from the Wanderer's outwardly showing of his indifference to them.

Summary

The simplest one-liner to answer "What is the Wanderer's goal now that he is a part of Genshin Impact?" Is: he wants to live through his own free will, hold on to the truth of his past, and heal the wounds of those he has chosen to forget. This is a complete departure from what the Wanderer initially sought. Previously, he was trying to achieve meaning for himself through his own destruction or erasure; he is now trying to achieve meaning through his own choices — even if it comes with pain.

You should be mindful of the Dottore project, the new relationships he is establishing with Nahida and the Traveler, as well as all things related to Snezhnaya, to observe where he will likely gain clarity around the reality of the journey ahead of him.
